Abstract

This paper examines the determinants of job satisfaction in Britain using nationally representative linked employer-employee data and alternative econometric techniques. It uses eight different facets of job satisfaction for the purpose and is able to establish possible differences in the factors affecting different aspects of job satisfaction. It also underscores the importance of accounting for unobserved workplace heterogeneity. Key new findings include: differential effects on job satisfaction between dependent children and other dependents, the importance of type of employment contract, the presence of gaps between employees’ skill and the skill requirements of their job, working long hours being positively associated with most facets of satisfaction relating to intrinsic aspect of jobs and working in the public sector being positively associated with all facets of job satisfaction except ‘satisfaction with pay’, among others.
